Do I need to try all the fashions?

3 November 2026

Why chasing every trend clutters your wardrobe, and how to decide what’s worth trying.

No, you don’t need to try every new fashion to show you’re current. Staying stylish is far more about confidence, self-awareness and a look that feels like you than about chasing every micro-trend.

Trends come and go faster than ever, driven by social media and fast fashion. True style lasts. Many of the most stylish women I know build their wardrobes around timeless pieces, with a few selective, intentional updates each season.

Follow every trend and you end up with a cluttered wardrobe, wasted money and outfits that feel like costumes rather than expressions of who you are. Fashion should enhance your life, not dictate it.

Is it right for your age?

Some people can get away with almost anything. I’ve seen pictures of a slim younger woman wearing a bin bag, and looking good. But most of us need to be a little more honest with the mirror. That isn’t about rules for “dressing your age”; it’s about choosing what genuinely flatters you now, not what flattered you at 22.

Is it right for your shape?

Some cuts are made for some bodies and not others. A trend that looks wonderful on a six-foot influencer may do nothing for you, and that’s fine. Know the silhouettes you feel great in and let the rest pass you by.

Is it right for your colouring?

The season’s “it” colour won’t suit everyone. If it drains your face, wear it away from your face (a bag, shoes or a belt), or skip it altogether.

Fashion blunders clutter you up

We all have them: the piece bought in a moment of trend fever and worn once. They sit in the wardrobe making you feel guilty and taking up space you need for things you actually wear. Let them go.

Gone out of fashion? Why keep it?

“It might come back” is one of the most common reasons I hear for hanging on to things. When styles do come back, they return changed: a different cut, a different length, a different fabric. Clear out what’s past it and make way for tomorrow’s fashions.

How to decide what to try and what to skip

Does it suit your personal style and body? Know your core preferences first: the colours, shapes and fabrics you feel great in. Try a trend only if it enhances what already works for you. Ask yourself, “Would I wear this in a year or two, or is it just hype?” If it feels like a costume, skip it.

Timeless or trendy?

  • Timeless pieces: classic silhouettes such as trench coats, well-tailored trousers and crisp shirts, neutral colours and quality fabrics like wool and cotton. These come round again and mix well.
  • Micro-trends: very specific details, such as a particular cut, a bold print or an accessory that’s everywhere for one season. They saturate fast and fade. If you love one, try it cheaply or as an accent.

Does it fit your life? Think about your day-to-day life, your age, your shape and what you actually do. A trend that looks great on Instagram may not survive commuting, the school run or the office. Put comfort and versatility first.

Will it last? Invest in pieces you’ll wear again and again. For trends, choose affordable versions or small touches: the season’s colour in a scarf rather than a whole outfit.

Experiment wisely

  • Keep track of what you actually wear and love (photos on your phone work well).
  • Make a mood board, or follow a few genuinely inspiring accounts rather than trend-chasers.
  • Try things on in the shop before you buy.
  • Aim for balance: around 80% reliable favourites and 20% fresh experiments keeps you current without the overwhelm.

“Dress for yourself first. Confidence is the best fashion statement.”

The bottom line

The women who look most current often have a signature style that evolves slowly. Trends can inspire, but they shouldn’t rule. If your wardrobe is full of trend buys you never quite wear, I’d love to help you sort what stays and what goes.

Cheers,
Sophie
